The devastating shooting was caused by a twenty-three year old student at Virginia Tech named Seung-Hui Cho on April 16, 2007. Cho was a senior English major with quite a list of mental illnesses and disorders.
He had a severe anxiety disorder that made him very socially awkward and he had a hard time talking to people, which could have contributed to him being angry at the world and not telling anyone about his anger. He often said that he didn’t like wealthy people. After the first shooting, he wrote in what was thought to be a suicide letter, “You made me do this”, blaming his killing spree on other people, possibly “wealthy people” that he disliked. Cho was very quiet, which is a desired attribute in his native South Korea, but his condition was very extreme. He also had a hard time making new friends, especially when he moved to America.
Seung-Hui Cho might have also had autism which could have been what made him so socially awkward. He went to a counselor in high school to help him with mental problems. Cho stopped going to this counselor after his junior year of high school, and Virginia Tech was never told of his illnesses. Just about a year before the shooting, Cho was accused of stalking two girls on campus, possibly due to his inability to communicate with people properly. His mental problems were probably the reason why he went on a shooting rampage, and if the college had known about his disabilities, maybe the shooting would not have happened.
