| Students of Virginia Tech join together to commemorate their classmates that died in the shooting on April 16th. |
As a result of this confrontation, the current students of Virginia Tech have to deal with limitations due to the massacre. To avoid another unpleasant incident similar to this one, people in charge have given the students less freedoms by adding safeguards and regulations.
After the first round of shootings in the Virginia Tech massacre, an email was sent out to all of the students informing them of the murders. However none of the classes were cancelled because the school administrators believed that the murders were not going to recur. Many students were unaware of the prior shootings and they did not receive the email in time. This helped contribute to the massacre. Consequently, a lot of schools and universities today have altered their emergency procedures in order to protect the students better. If there is a risk that students will be in danger, businesses should not be allowed to go on as usual. Also, because of the delay between the groups of murders, Virginia Tech has faced lawsuits.
The families and victims that survived the shootings were compensated for their suffering. The payments ranged from $11,500 to $208,000.
The Virginia Tech massacre stirred up the gun politics debate, and some believe that guns are too accessible. The perpetrator, Seung-Hui Cho, was mentally ill and he was still able to purchase guns. Adversaries to this debate argued that the college is a gun-free zone so the other students and faculty would not be able to defend themselves anyway.
